What is a D00 file? Partial disc image file created by VirtualDrive, a disc imaging and burning application; saves one part of an overall disc image where other parts use the extensions ".d01," ".d02," etc.; used when the size limit of a disc image is exceeded so that the volume is split across multiple files.

More Information D00 files save data in a format that can be burned to a disc or mounted as a virtual disc in the software when used with the other disc parts. These files are used for backups and for mounting disc data without having to insert the physical disc. NOTE: VirtualDrive uses the .VCD extension for full disc images. When disc images are split into multiple files, the files may use the compound extensions ".vcd.d00," ".vcd.d01," etc.

A D00 file may also be an audio file created by the OPL2 FM synthesizer, a sound chip developed by Yamaha for older computers and gaming systems to produce music and sound effects. It contains synthesized audio generated through Frequency Modulation (FM), which modulates waveforms to create distinctive electronic sounds.

More Information

Enthusiasts and developers who work with retro audio or recreate classic game sounds from the 1980s and 1990s will most likely encounter D00 files. While hardware supporting the OPL2 FM synthesizer is outdated, users can still play back the audio files with emulators or software that supports OPL2 FM synthesis.

NOTE: The OPL2 chip is part of the OPL series of sound chips. "OPL" stands for "FM Operator Type-L."
