ChessBase Fritz is a chess-playing program that allows users to play chess against a variable-difficulty AI . Programs like Fritz use endgame databases, more commonly referred to as tablebases, to play specific endgame sequences perfectly. For example, if a game has entered an endgame state in which the human player has only a king and queen, and Fritz has a king, rook, and bishop, Fritz can use related EMD files to select its moves for the rest of the game.
Each EMD file contains data on a specific endgame state, in which each player has a specific set of pieces left. To help them play more quickly and effectively, chess-playing programs can "thread" EMD files together or reference the files while selecting procedurally-analyzed moves. This allows the programs to better plan for and work toward future advantageous game states.
