What is an INFO file?

An INFO file is a formatted information document created by Texinfo, a GNU Project help document generation tool. It stores documentation in a book format with chapters, sections, and subsections and can contain up to four layers of depth.

Generic Information File

An INFO file may also be a generic text information file that may be included with various software programs or file downloads. It contains unformatted plain text that describes the contents of the software or download. INFO files are often used to document version information, authorship, and copyright information.

Since INFO files are saved in a text format, you can use a simple text editor to open an INFO file. Microsoft Notepad or WordPad can be used in Windows, Apple TextEdit can be used in macOS, and gedit can be used in Linux.

Minecraft Forge Information File

An INFO file may also be a data file used by Minecraft Forge, a tool that enables users to install Minecraft mods. It contains plain text information in JSON format that describes one or more mods and their properties.

NOTE: The file is stored within a .JAR or .ZIP archive that can be unzipped by programs such as 7-Zip and WinRAR. Since the INFO file contains plain text it can be edited by any text editor.

Drupal Module Information File

File used by Drupal, a website content management system; stores information about a Drupal module ( .MODULE file), which is a plugin that adds features to the base Drupal installation; contains the module name, description, the core Drupal version supported by the module, and any dependencies required by the module.

An INFO file with the same filename prefix is required in order for Drupal to recognize the module. For example mymodule.module and mymodule.info are valid names. Both files should be installed to the following directory, where mysite is your website (which could also be the all directory):

ZoomBrowser Image Index File

Stores information about images saved in a Zoom Browser photo album; includes thumbnail image data, which enables quick browsing of images in the album; created when one or more image files are opened by ZoomBrowser.

The ZoomBrowser index file is typically named "Zbthumbnail.info" and is saved in the same directory as the images it corresponds to. The Zbthumbnail.info file is usually hidden but may appear inside your album folder depending on your computer's file viewing settings.
