Overview

What is a AIN file? Game data file used by games developed with Source, a first-person shooter (FPS) game engine developed by Valve; stores a navigation mesh, which consists of points and connected lines that make up potential traversal paths for artificial intelligence (AI) non-player characters (NPCs), or "bots;" used for real-time navigation and movement for AI computer players.

More Information The original nodegraph is created using the Level Designer component of the Source engine SDK, which is called the Valve Hammer Editor. Once complete, an AIN file is automatically compiled by the Source engine when the game is loaded. The compiled AIN file is saved to the \maps\graphs\ directory within the game installation directory. NOTE: The Valve Source engine is used for games such as Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2.

AIN Compressed Archive

An AIN file is a compressed archive created by AIN, an archiver available for MS-DOS. It contains one or more compressed files. Different versions of AIN save AIN files with slightly different file formats, which other versions may not recognize.

More Information

AIN is a shareware compression utility created by Transas Marine. It allows users to compress one or more files into a single archive. These archives' filenames typically use the .ain extension.

Transas Marine released multiple versions of AIN, which compress and decompress files slightly differently. As a result, you may not be able to use older versions of AIN to decompress AIN files created by newer versions of AIN (and vice versa).

How to open a AIN file

You can open an AIN file with AIN. To do so, you may have to run AIN in an MS-DOS emulator, such as DOSBox.
