A DIG file may also be an audio file created by Digidesign Sound Designer, a Macintosh-based audio editing program developed in the 1980s. It contains uncompressed Pulse-Code Modulation ( PCM ) data in the Digidesign (DIG) format to preserve sound quality without loss.

More Information

Digidesign introduced Sound Designer and the DIG format in 1984. It soon became common among audio professionals and musicians for recording and editing digital audio on Macintosh computers. While common in the 1980s and early 1990s, the format declined in the mid-1990s as more versatile and standardized formats, like .WAV and .AIFF , became widely supported across platforms.

NOTE: Digidesign eventually discontinued Sound Designer in the 1990s in favor of Pro Tools , which Avid Technology acquired in 1995.
