What is an ODL file?

File written in the Object Description Language (ODL), a language used in the Windows software programming context; allows developers to make their ActiveX objects visible to other vendors by exposing and publishing properties of the objects.

OneDrive Event Log

An ODL file may also be an event log created by the Windows or Mac version of Microsoft OneDrive. It contains a list of events that occurred while a user was using OneDrive. OneDrive uses ODL files to record actions synced to a user's OneDrive account.

Microsoft OneDrive is a file hosting and sharing app used by individuals, organizations, and businesses to share documents, photos, and other files with each other. While users primarily access OneDrive via a web browser, they can also download desktop versions of OneDrive, which allow them to access and edit files offline.

The desktop versions of OneDrive store a record of users' actions in ODL files. Microsoft can use these files to troubleshoot any synchronization issues that occur after a user edits files offline.

Only a user's most recent OneDrive log is stored as an ODL file. When OneDrive creates a new ODL file, it compresses the previous ODL file and renames it to use the .ODLGZ extension.
