An SND file may also be a sound file used by M.U.G.E.N (or just Mugen), a freeware 2D fighting game engine. It contains WAVE audio data, and is generated from multiple .WAV files. SND files are used for sounds played during various parts of the game, which includes during gameplay and "motif" title screens.
More Information
You will most likely only encounter an SND file if you create games with the M.U.G.E.N engine. Audio data stored in SND files include action sound effects, such as punches or kicks, character voice clips, and button clicks.
SND files that store sounds for characters are located in the chars/ directory. SND files that store system sounds for title screens are located in the data/ directory.
NOTE: The SND file is one of several resource files used by M.U.G.E.N, which includes Sprite .SFF , Character States .CNS , Character Commands .CMD , Character Definition .DEF , and Animation .AIR files.
Common SND Filenames
[character_name].snd - SND file that stores audio data for a specific character.
system.snd - SND file that stores audio data for game system screens.
How to open an SND file
While SND files are referenced by M.U.G.E.N, you can open SND files with Audacity as "Raw Data" in Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can also open SND files with Fighter Factory, which is a Windows program used to modify M.U.G.E.N content.

Akai MPC Sample

An SND file may also be an audio sample format used by various Akai Music Production Center (MPC) samplers, including the MPC2000 and MPC3000 models. It stores a sound sample , which may be a drum, instrument note, vocal snippet, or sound effect, that producers and musicians use to create beats and music compositions.
More Information
Akai MPC samplers are hardware sequencers widely used in hip-hop, electronic, and sample-based music production. Akai introduced MPCs in the late 1980s, revolutionizing beat-making by allowing producers to record, edit, and trigger samples using velocity-sensitive drum pads.
MPC3000 (released in 1994) and MPC2000 (released in 1997) are the most prominent Akai MPC samplers that support SND files. They can record, edit, and play back SND samples. Users can record sounds directly into the sampler within the MPC workflow, import samples from external sources (like floppy disks or SCSI drives), and assign them to drum pads. The MPC’s editing tools also allow users to trim, loop, pitch shift, and filter to shape the sound.
How to open an SND file
You can open SND files with Midicase.com MPC Editor in Windows. MPC Editor is designed for creating and editing Akai MPC program files ( .PGM ) for older MPC models like the MPC2000 and MPC2000XL. While it does not function as a dedicated SND file player, you can use it to open, edit, and assign SND samples within an MPC program (PGM).
