Lumia Text Message Backup

A VMSG file may also be a backup file created by a Microsoft Lumia smartphone. It contains a copy of a user's text messages. Lumia users could use the Transfer My Data app to create VMSG files and transfer them between phones.

In 2011, Microsoft and Nokia partnered to release the Microsoft Lumia line of smartphones. These phones ran the Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile operating systems. Microsoft discontinued the Lumia in 2017.

Lumia users could use the Transfer My Data app to back up their phone's data and transfer it to another Lumia. Transfer My Data saved backups of users' text messages as VMSG files.

NOTE: Some other smartphones, such as OPPO brand phones, and apps, such as SMS EasyExporter, can also save a copy of users' text messages in the VMSG format.

VMSG files are plain text files, which means you can open them in any text editor (such as Microsoft Notepad or Apple TextEdit ). However, the text messages a VMSG file contains are encoded using QUOTED-PRINTABLE encoding. Therefore, you will not be able to read the messages in a text editor.

Instead, you can use SMS EasyReader&Printer (Android) or VMG Converter (Android) to open a VMSG file and convert the messages it contains into a readable format.
