An NBK file may also be a digital notebook created by SMART Technologies Notebook, a lesson planning app for teachers. It can contain text, pictures, video, audio, and other lesson-related content. NBK files have been replaced by .XBK and .NOTEBOOK files.

Using SMART Technologies Notebook, teachers can create lesson plans and activities for use with a SMART Board interactive display. These lesson plans and activities are saved as digital notebooks that consist of one or more pages. In the past, Notebook saved teachers' notebooks as NBK files.
Current versions of SMART Technologies Notebook save notebooks as NOTEBOOK files. If you want to use an NBK file with newer versions of Notebook and SMART Board interactive displays, you must first open it in Notebook and convert it to the NOTEBOOK format.
How to open an NBK file
You can open an NBK file with SMART Technologies Notebook. After doing so, you'll likely want to convert your NBK file to the .NOTEBOOK format, so you can more easily use the file with current versions of Notebook and SMART Board interactive displays. To save an NBK file as a NOTEBOOK file, open it and select File → Save As .
NOTE: Due to compatibility issues between formats, some NBK files cannot be converted to the NOTEBOOK format.
