A TMP file may also be a temporary data file created by MakeMusic Finale, a music notation program. It contains cached data for the score you are currently working on. Typically, Finale deletes TMP files after you close the program.

More Information

Composers use Finale to compose, edit, and play back musical scores. While a composer is working on a score ( .MUSX file), Finale creates one or more TMP files that contain temporary data related to that score. When you close Finale, the program is supposed to delete TMP files related to the score you had open.

However, Finale is infamous for handling TMP files incorrectly. For example, Finale sometimes fails to keep its TMP files open, allowing your operating system to delete them while you are editing the related score. This can prevent you from being able to save the score. Finale also sometimes fails to delete TMP files when it should. You can safely manually delete any leftover Finale TMP files.

Where are Finale TMP files stored?

You can see where Finale is storing TMP files by opening the program and selecting Preferences → Folders . The location listed in the Temporary Files field is where Finale is storing TMP files. You can also use this setting to manually specify where Finale should save TMP files. (Some users recommend creating a new directory in which to save Finale TMP files to avoid the accidental deletion error described above.)
