Overview

What is a CAD file? A CAD file is a CAD design created by version 21 and earlier of BobCAD-CAM software (replaced by the .BBCD format in version 22). It stores information about a 2D and 3D part, including its geometry and dimensions. Before being replaced, BobCAD-CAM users opened, edited, and converted CAD files when designing parts and products for manufacturing.

More Information BobCAD-CAM is available in several editions, including Mill, Lathe, Router, Wire EDM, and Laser, Plasma, & WaterJet. Each edition provides different capabilities in the CAD-CAM process. While BobCAD-CAM saved designs in the proprietary CAD format before replacing it with the BBCD format, it can also import content from other CAD-related files. Examples of supported formats include .SLDPRT , .DWG , .DSF , .3DM , .IGES , .STEP , .STL , .SAT , .X_B , and .X_T files.

A CAD file may also be a CAD file created by Autodesk QuickCAD, a CAD 2D vector drawing program that was discontinued in 2004. It contains a technical 2D drawing, which includes geometry and measurement information. CAD files are often used for storing floorplan layouts and mechanical designs.

More Information

QuickCAD CAD files are only supported by QuickCAD. In order to open them in another program, the files must be converted to a more widely supported format, such as the AutoCAD Drawing .DWG format or Drawing Exchange .DXF format. Unfortunately, the only program able to convert QuickCAD CAD files is Autodesk QuickCAD, which is no longer developed.

NOTE: Autodesk QuickCAD was originally Softdesk Drafix Quick CAD in the 1990s. But when Softdesk was acquired by Autodesk, Drafix Quick CAD was repackaged as Autodesk QuickCAD, which was developed until version 8 in 2004.
