What is an FPT file?

Database file created by FileMaker Pro, a relational database program; contains textual information representing a "memo;" used to describe a database with raw text instead of using a standard database field, which typically is limited to fewer numbers of characters.

FoxPro Table Memo

An FPT file may also be a memo for a .DBF table created by Microsoft Visual FoxPro, a discontinued database management system. It stores text notes that contain too many characters to be included in a corresponding database table. Instead of storing the text directly, the table references entries in the FPT file, which contains the full content of memo fields, such as comments, notes, or other unstructured text data.

Visual FoxPro creates FPT files and stores them alongside DBF files to ensure that large or dynamic text data does not disrupt the structure or efficiency of the database. If an FPT file becomes corrupted or missing, it can cause errors when accessing the database, as the memo field data will no longer be retrievable. Therefore, users are encouraged to create regular backups of FPT files that include memo fields to prevent data loss.

NOTE: The last version of Visual FoxPro was 9.0, which Microsoft published in 2007.

You can open FPT files with the discontinued Microsoft Visual FoxPro in Windows. Since FPT files contain binary data and plain text, you can also open them with a text editor, but some of the information will not be legible.

Alpha Five Table Memo File

Memo file created by Alpha Five, a desktop, web, and mobile application IDE ; contains any memo fields that are created in the .DBF file; only exists when a memo field is defined in a DBF file; linked to a DBF file, any changes made to the DBF file will alter the FPT file.

The FPT file is created by Alpha Five because tables in DBF files have width limitations on how many characters can be in a column. The memo format in FPT files is not limited, they can have any alphanumeric (a string of data with numbers and letters) length. So Alpha Five creates a ten character field in the DBF file that references the memo location in the linked FPT file that contains all of the data for that record in the table.

NOTE: In 2013, Alpha Five became Alpha Anywhere.

[Name of your table].fpt - When a memo field is defined in your table, the FPT file will be created with the same name as your table.
