A NAR file may also be an ukagaka ghost file. It is used to install a new character, known as a ghost or mascot, in ukagaka software. NAR files are Zip-compressed archives, which contain all the files needed to install a character.

More Information

NAR file open in SSP

Ukagaka programs like SSP allow PC users to show mascot characters on their desktop. These characters "speak" to users and each other using dialogue shown in speech bubbles. They can also perform some helpful functions, such as informing the user of new emails or telling the user what time it is.

Each ukagaka program comes with default characters, but users can download and install custom characters from the Internet. Custom characters are saved in NAR files. These zipped archives contain images used to show the character, dictionary ( .DIC ) files that contain the character's dialogue, and .TXT files that explain how to install and use the character. For example, a NAR file might include a readme.txt file that explains the unique actions you can perform with that custom character.

How to open a NAR file

Decompressed NAR file's contents

To install a NAR file in SSP (Windows):

The character your NAR file contains will then become your mascot.

You can attempt to use a NAR file to install a character in other ukagaka programs, such as NINIX, NiseRingo, and Ukagaka for Android. However, those programs may not be able to correctly load your NAR file.

If you want to view the files your NAR file contains, you can decompress it as you would any Zip archive. You may have to change the file's extension to .zip before you can decompress it.

A NAR file may also be a Zip compressed archive created by the Smart Cam or Refocus apps installed on Nokia and Microsoft Lumia smartphones. It contains multiple .JPG images and an .XML metadata file. NAR files are created when a user uses Smart Cam's Best Shot or Rich Capture features or edits an image in Smart Cam or Refocus.

More Information

Lumia phones' Smart Cam app allows users to take and edit photos. When users use a Smart Cam feature that produces multiple photos, such as capturing multiple images using the app's Best Shot or Rich Capture features, Smart Cam saves those photos in a NAR archive. After using Best Shot or Rich Capture, users typically select and save a photo they like best. That photo is saved as a JPG file, but the additional photos remain saved in the NAR archive.

Smart Cam and the Lumia Refocus app also produce NAR archives when users edit a photo. For example, if a user alters an image's focus in Refocus, Refocus saves a NAR archive that includes the original and edited image. Each NAR archive also contains an XML metadata file, which describes various attributes of the archive's images.

How to open a NAR file

To view the images a NAR archive contains, you must first decompress the archive. You can use any Zip decompression utility, such as 7-Zip (Windows), Apple Archive Utility (Mac), or B1 Free Archiver (cross-platform) to decompress your NAR archive.

After you decompress your archive, you can view the images it contains using any image viewing application.
