A RIFF file may also be a raster image saved in a proprietary format developed by Fractal Software. It contains a grayscale or color image. Letraset ImageStudio and ColorStudio create RIFF files.

More Information

Letraset ImageStudio and ColorStudio are image editors for old Macintosh computers. ImageStudio allows users to create and edit grayscale images. ColorStudio allows users to create and edit color images (which can contain CMYK or RGBA color data). Both programs save images users have created as RIFF files.

RIFF files may be compressed or uncompressed. Uncompressed RIFF files open more quickly in ImageStudio and ColorStudio. However, they also have much larger file sizes than compressed RIFF files. Compressed RIFF files typically have much smaller file sizes than comparable .TIFF files.

NOTE: While Letraset published ImageStudio and ColorStudio, Mark Zimmer of Fractal Software developed the RIFF file format.
