Overview
What is a AIR file? An AIR file is an installation package used for distributing Adobe AIR applications. It contains code and all the assets for an application. AIR files are typically distributed via download but may also be distributed via email or CD-ROM.
More Information AIR files are similar to the more common .EXE and .DMG files, which are used to install applications. However, AIR files can be used to install applications on multiple platforms, whereas EXE files and DMG files are restricted to Windows and macOS. If you receive an AIR file you will need to install Adobe AIR on your computer in order to open the file. After you install the program, simply double-click the AIR file and the application will be installed on your computer. It is important to note that Windows Vista systems may not correctly register the ".air" file extension due to a locked file-type association in the registry. NOTE: AIR stands for "Adobe Integrated Runtime" and is a multi-platform environment for running Internet-based applications on the desktop.

Flight Simulator X Flight Dynamics

An AIR file is a binary game data file used by Microsoft Flight Simulator X, a popular flight simulator for Windows. It contains flight dynamics settings for a specific Flight Simulator X aircraft. For example, an AIR file specifies an aircraft's roll performance and aileron parameters.
More Information
In Flight Simulator X, players pilot various models of simulated real-world aircraft in a realistic flight simulator. Each aircraft's characteristics are defined by two configuration files:
While the CFG file is a plain text file, which can be opened and edited in any text editor (as well as specialized aircraft configuration editors), the AIR file is a binary file, which is not meant to be directly edited by players. However, some third-party utilities allow players to edit the flight dynamics settings an AIR file contains, to alter how the aircraft associated with the file flies.
How to open a AIR file
You can open an AIR file and edit the settings it contains with Flight1 AirWrench (Windows), a third-party Flight Simulator aircraft editor. AirWrench shows settings from AIR files on its Dynamics tab. AirWrench also shows and allows users to edit settings from an aircraft's CFG file.
