What is a PTX file?

Session file format introduced with Pro Tools 10 digital audio workstation (DAW) software; supports audio, MIDI, and software instrument tracks, as well as effects, mixing settings, and other edits; stores references to audio files but not the audio files themselves.

E-Transcript File

File created by E-Transcript Manager, a program used for creating certified electronic transcripts; contains transcript data recorded from a courtroom hearing; most commonly used by court reporting firms when creating legal transcripts for attorneys; created to reduce the file size of emailed transcripts.

E-Transcripts may also use the ".exe" extension, which allows the transcript to be viewed from a self-contained file. However, email filters often stop the delivery of ".exe" files. For this reason, the PTX file format was created as non-executable format to more easily bypass email server filters.

PTX E-Transcripts may be converted back and forth between ".exe" E-Transcripts.

NOTE: RealLegal, the developers of the PTX format, were acquired by LiveNote and then by Thomson West. Both the West and RealLegal brands are used to advertise and sell similar software applications. The Mac version of RealLegal E-Transcript Viewer is only available for Mac OS Classic, the predecessor to Mac OS X.

V.Flash PTX Image

A PTX file may also be an image saved in the V.Flash PTX raster image format. It is used to store graphics for games for the V.Flash educational gaming console released in 2006. The V.Flash PTX format consists of a header followed by the image data.

PTX files are uncommon since they are only used in games that have been discontinued. The VTech V.Flash gaming console was discontinued in 2007, a year after it was released. You most likely will only encounter a PTX file if you dump the game files from the CD in which the game is delivered. NOTE: Some games that use the V.Flash PTX format include The Amazing Spider-Man: Countdown to Doom, Cars: In the Fast Lane, and SpongeBob SquarePants: Idea Sponge.

Since the PTX format is rare, there are few programs that support it. However, you can upload a PTX file to Tom's Editor, which is an online application, to view or convert the image.

If you are looking to just convert a PTX file to a more common image format, you can use FFmpeg. After converting the PTX file, you can open it with an image editor.

Pentax RAW Image File

PopCap Games Texture File

A PTX file may also be an image file used in a PopCap Games video game, such as Plants vs. Zombies 2. It contains an image used as an in-game background, item, or character. In Plants vs. Zombies games, PTX files are stored in the main.pak/​images directory.

PTX files may be compressed or uncompressed. In Android versions of Plants vs. Zombies games, compressed PTX files are compressed using Ericsson Texture Compression (ETC1). In iOS versions of Plants vs. Zombies games, compressed PTX files are compressed using PowerVR Texture Compression (PVRTC).

You can use the Taiji Plants vs. Zombies 2 hacking tool to convert PTX images to .PNG images. Then, you can open the converted images in any image viewing application.
