Overview

What is a SES file? An SES file contains a session created by MSC Patran, a pre and post-processing program for Finite Element Analysis (FEA). It contains a list of directives, such as PCL statements or NOODL commands, that can be executed by Patran. SES files are automatically opened when Patran is started and closed when Patran is quit.

More Information The SES file can serve a variety of purposes: Recreate a model from nothing. Act as a log of transactions for review and modification. Work as a macro , repetitively executing a sequence of commands. NOTE: For each session, a two-digit number is appended on to the end of the SES extension, e.g, the 3rd session file would appear as example.ses.03 .

Audition Session (Legacy)

An SES file contains an audio project created by Adobe Audition, a sound production application. It stores an audio production session, which may include multiple tracks and mixing settings for each track, along with references to audio files. SES files do not store actual audio data.

More Information

SES files were originally used by Syntrillium Software's Cool Edit Pro, which was acquired by Adobe in May 2003. Adobe rebranded the software as Adobe Audition and released the first version of Audition later that year.

The SES file type was the primary file type associated with Audition and an integral component of sound recording, mixing, editing, and mastering in the application. It was created when saving a session, which allowed you to close the session, then re-open it for further work.

Adobe replaced the SES format with the XML-based .SESX format when they released Audition 3.0. Eventually, Adobe discontinued support for SES files in Adobe Audition CS5.5.

How to open a SES file

You can only open SES files with Adobe Audition CS5.5 or earlier. To open an SES file with Audition, select File → Open Session .

How do I convert SES files?

Since versions later than Audition CS5.5 do not support SES files, you need to convert them to SESX files or to an XML interchangeable format in order to open them with later versions of Audition. You can convert SES files to SESX files with Ses2Sesx or if you have access to Adobe Audition 3.0, you can export SES files to XML format to open them in later versions of Audition.
