What is a NOT file? Musical score that contains MIDI performance data and notation data; saved in a proprietary format that may be opened with Notation Software programs, including Musician and Composer; can be exported to a more standard format such as .MID or .KAR after being opened.
More Information NOT files can also be used as song templates by saving them in the \Program Files\Notation\Template directory.

A NOT file may also be a note file created by MakeMusic Finale, a professional scorewriter. It contains MIDI information recorded in Finale's Transcription window. Current versions of Finale do not create or use NOT files.

Prior to Finale 2014, the program included a Transcription Mode that allowed composers to record live keyboard performances. These performances appeared as graphics within the Transcription Mode window.
Optionally, composers could save a recorded performance as a NOT file. This allowed them to load the performance in Transcription Mode at a later time if needed.
How to open a NOT file
In Finale 2012 and earlier versions, you can open NOT files with the HyperScribe tool's Transcription Mode. To do so:
