An SQF file may also be a compressed archive used by Squashfs, a read-only file system software for Linux. It stores file system data in a highly compressed, read-only format. SQF files may contain files, inodes, and directories. They are most often used to store initial ramdisks (initrd).
More Information
Some Linux and Android distributions use Squashfs to mount file systems. These file systems are compressed using either gzip, LZMA, LZO, LZ4, or Zstd compression. Squashfs is intended for only read-only file system use.
Distributions that use SQF files use the files as initial ramdisks, which are loaded as part of the Linux startup process. SQF files are not meant to be used as permanent root file systems.
NOTE: Squashfs file systems may also be saved as .SQUASHFS , .squ , or .SFS files.
