What is an STY file?

An STY file is a music style created for a Yamaha synthesizer. It contains a musical rhythm with multiple instruments in the proprietary Yamaha Style (STY) format. Users can save these STY files to a disk and then load them onto compatible Yamaha keyboards to enhance their performances with rich, pre-arranged accompaniments.

Band-in-a-Box Styles File

Musical style file used by Band-in-a-Box, (BiaB) a program that automatically creates full band accompaniments; contains a playing style, such as Jazz, Rock, Hip-Hop, or Country; used for generating stylized sounds for a certain genre of music.

BiaB styles can be MIDI or they may use real instruments and drums, called RealStyles. RealStyles use real recordings of musicians for the audio samples.

STY files act as plug-ins for the Band-in-a-Box software. The software installation typically contains many different styles. Additional styles can be purchased and downloaded from the PG Music Band-in-a-Box website.

Aegisub Subtitle Styles File

File created by Aegisub, a cross-platform subtitle editor; saved in a plain text format and stores the font properties for one or more styles in a subtitle category; includes the font type, colors, effects, and margins; used for saving and loading fonts created in the program.

Aegisub styles are managed through the Styles Manager window, which is accessed by selecting Subtitles → Styles Manager... from the application menu. STY files are saved automatically and are not accessed directly by the user.

The Windows version of Aegisub stores STY files in the following directory: [user]\​AppData\​Roaming\​Aegisub\​catalog\​ . The Mac version saves to this directory: [user]/​Library/​Application Support/​Aegisub/​catalog/​ .

NewsMaker Story File

File created by NewsMaker, an application that allows students to create news stories; saved in an XML format and contains the written text for the story; referenced within a NewsMaker project ( .NMP file).

NewsMaker projects can contain one or more stories, each of which are stored in a separate STY file. Users don't open STY files directly since they are saved within the NewsMaker project directory by default and can be accessed from the opened project in the software.

Korg Keyboard Style

An STY file may also be a musical style created for a Korg keyboard or synthesizer, such as the PA5X, PA4X, and 3X LE models. It contains all of the information about a musical style in the compressed, encrypted Korg Style (STY) format. Information stored in an STY file includes drum patterns, bass lines, and backing instrument tracks that users load onto a Korg keyboard to add a full band-like arrangement that changes in real time based on the chords and notes you play.

Korg produces various electronic musical instruments, most prominently keyboards and synthesizers, which support STY files. The format supports multiple sections, such as intros, variations, fills, and endings, allowing you to create a dynamic and professional-sounding performance.

For example, musicians can load these files directly onto their Korg arranger keyboard to expand their library of styles or customize and create new ones using Korg’s software. STY files are particularly helpful for live performers and composers who need versatile and easily accessible accompaniment options.

NOTE: Yamaha, a competitor to Korg, also saves styles as STY files but in a different format. Yamaha styles are only compatible with Yamaha keyboards, and Korg styles are only compatible with Korg keyboards.

You can open STY files with KORG PA Manager, GNIStyle, and Sofeh Music Studio in Windows. For example, to open an STY file with KORG PA Manager, click "File Viewer" and then select SET Browser .
