GIS file created in the Styled Layer Descriptor format, an XML format used for specifying the display of map layers; can describe both raster and vector data and may include colors, labels, fonts, legend specifications, and other information.

More Information

SLD files are used by a protocol called the Web Map Service (WMS). This service is used for generating map images over a network using a GIS database. When a database is queried, an SLD file is used for specifying how the map is presented to the end user.

NOTE: You can export map layers from ESRI ArcMap by selecting map layers and then choosing Export → Export Layer Style to SLD... .
