A MAL file contains source code written in the Malbolge programming language . For example, it may contain a Malbolge script . Because Malbolge is an esoteric programming language, MAL files are uncommon.

More Information

MAL file open in Microsoft Visual Studio Code

Developer Ben Olmstead created the Malbolge programming language in 1998. Olmstead purposefully designed the language to be nearly impossible to use, to challenge his and other developers' programming skills.

Unlike programs written in most other programming languages, programs written in Malbolge look like a series of non-understandable nonsense characters. For example, the following is a "Hello World" program written in Malbolge:

(=*<`#9]~6ZY327Uv4-QsqpMn&+Ij"'E%e{Ab~w=_:]Kw%o44Uqp0/Q?xNvL:`H%c#DD2^WV>gY;dts76qKJImZkj

Developers creating Malbolge programs typically save those programs' source code in MAL files. After finishing a program, developers use a Malbolge interpreter to run the program their file contains.
