An RPM file may also be a plugin for old versions of RealNetworks RealPlayer, a media player application. It extends the functionality of RealPlayer by adding support for additional media formats, improving playback features, or integrating with third-party services. Recent versions of RealPlayer no longer support RPM files.

More Information

RPM plugins improved the versatility of older versions of RealPlayer by allowing users to customize the app to better fit their needs. For example, if RealPlayer did not natively support a video format, a user could install an RPM plugin that added support for the video file type instead of downloading and installing a different program that supported the file format.
