What is a MED file? A MED file is an audio file created by MED or OctaMED, which were sound trackers for the Commodore Amiga. It contains notes, pitches, and effects used to create music tracks and sound sequences.
More Information In 1991, developer Teijo Kinnunen and publisher RBF Software released OctaMED, a follow-up to the popular MED sound tracker. While MED used only MED files to store sounds, OctaMED used both MED and .8MED files to do the same. OctaMED was notable for being able to play eight-channel audio on the Commodore Amiga's four-channel sound chip. While OctaMED was ported to Windows in the late 1990s (under the name MED Soundstudio), it is no longer developed or maintained.

A MED file may also be a software development project created by Rockwell Automation RSView. It contains information about a program and references to other project files. MED files can be compiled into RSView Development Runtime ( .MER ) files.

Developers and other IT professionals can use RSView to develop, monitor, and control industrial automation systems. RSView is available in multiple versions, including RSView Studio and RSView Machine Edition (ME).
When a developer begins creating a new RSView automation program, their development project is saved as a MED file. This file contains all the information RSView needs to load the project and compile the program it contains. After a developer finishes developing their program, they can compile it and execute it as an MER file.
NOTE: In 2021, Rockwell Automation replaced RSView with FactoryTalk.
How to open a MED file
You can open an MER file in Rockwell Automation RSView (Windows). Note that RSView has been discontinued.
