Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate use many XMB files. All of these files are named effect_locator.xmb . The games use these files to map lighting and other effects files to 3D models.
While most players will never encounter Super Smash Bros.'s XMB files, modders and other interested parties have created utilities that allow them to extract, edit, and repackage XMB files. For example, modders can use the XMBDump utility to retrieve all of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U's XMB files.
How to open an XMB file
You can use the xmb_lib utility (cross-platform) to covert XMB files into .XML files. You can edit the resulting XML files using any text editor and repackage them using xmb_lib.
