Overview

What is a GLB file? A GLB file contains a 3D model saved in the GL Transmission Format (glTF). It stores information about a 3D model, such as node hierarchy, cameras, and materials, animations, and meshes in binary format. GLB files are the binary version of .GLTF files.

More Information GLB files can be used to save and share digital assets between different 3D modeling tools, similarly to .DAE files. However, they are also optimized for download speed and load time at runtime, which makes them easier to use in mobile- and web- based 3D modeling programs. They are also a more streamlined format for uploading and downloading from online digital asset databases, such as 3D Warehouse and Remix 3D. GLB files are similar to GLTF files in that they may include embedded resources or may reference external resources. If a GLB file comes with separate resources, they most likely will be the following files: Binary ( .BIN ) files - One or more BIN files that contain animation, geometry, and other data. Shader (GLSL) files - One or more GLSL files that contain shaders. Image ( .JPG , .PNG , etc.) files - One or more files that contain textures for the 3D model. The glTF is developed to be an efficient, extensible, interoperable format for the transmission and loading of 3D content. The goals of the format include, compact file sizes, fast loading, complete 3D scene representation, runtime independence, and extensibility to accompany further development. A GLB file may also be a globe file used by AGI Systems Tool Kit (STK), a program used to simulate aerospace missions, defense systems, and telecommunication systems. It stores a 3D globe that models real-world or simulated terrain. GLB files are used to share globes among STK users, allowing them to use others' globes within their own simulations.

More Information

To create a sharable GLB file, STK users can export their current globe using STK's Globe Manager. They can then upload that file to AGI Globeserver, a globe storage web server , allowing other STK users to access it.

NOTE: GLB files are text files that record what textures, images, and other files are used in a globe, as well as where those files are stored. As such, when users share a GLB file, they must also provide access to the textures, images, and other files referenced within that GLB file. Otherwise, the GLB file will not load properly.

How to open a GLB file

You can open a GLB file within AGI Systems Tool Kit by importing the file via STK's Globe Manager:

A GLB file may also be a game file created in the Glulx Blorb format, a format used for bundling different game resource files into a single archive. It may contain graphics, level information, music, or other data. GLB files are used by games such as DemonStar, a vertical scrolling shooter game that takes place in outer space.

More Information

GLB files were originally designed for use with "Z-machine" text adventure games, but has been adapted for other types of games.
