An SP2 file may also be an identification file included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). It contains no data. Windows XP checks for the presence of an SP2 file before installing Service Pack 2.

Before PCs and operating systems were regularly updated over the Internet, they were updated using physical CD-ROMs. Windows XP updates were stored on Windows XP Service Pack CDs. These CDs contained a number of files and folders, including a data file used to verify the Service Pack. On the Windows XP Service Pack 2 disc, this Service Pack identification file was named WIN51IP.SP2 (Windows XP SP2 Professional Edition) or WIN51IC.SP2 (Windows XP SP2 Home Edition).

Microsoft released Windows XP Service Pack 2 on August 25, 2004. The many network security improvements it contained were collectively codenamed Springboard and included a major upgrade to Windows Firewall.

How to open an SP2 file
