More Information The IMF file format was created by id Software for their video games. Due to low-quality nature of the sound and the proprietary format (AdLib sound cards only), the IMF format is no longer used. Some programs, such as AdPlug, emulate AdLib sound cards and can play IMF files.

An IMF file may also be an audio module created by Imago Orpheus, a music tracker for MS-DOS. It contains note patterns and instrument samples used to play a song. IMF files typically contain music created for video games or demos (audiovisual presentations).
More Information
IMF file open in OpenMPT
Lutz Roeder created and released Imago Orpheus in the 1990s. The program was primarily intended to be used to create video game soundtracks. It was released alongside Imago Wave, a program used to edit audio samples.
Imago Orpheus saved the audio modules (aka songs) users created with it as IMF files. While Imago Orpheus itself has been discontinued (and does not run on modern Windows machines), several modern music trackers can open IMF files.
How to open an IMF file
You can open an IMF file (and play the song it contains) with OpenMPT (Windows), Vitamin/CAIG ZXTune (multiplatform), or Xmp Mod Player (Android).
While you still can also open an IMF file with Imago Orpheus, which is available for download online, doing so isn't easy. To run Imago Orpheus, you'll likely need an MS-DOS emulator, such as DosBox.
How to convert an IMF file
You can use OpenMPT to convert IMF files to the following formats:
