Software Overview

Global Mapper is a GIS application used to view and convert vector, raster, and elevation data. It is developed for the Windows operating system.

The application supports over 250 different raster, vector, and elevation data types, such as 3DS Max, Blender, OBJ, COLLADA 3D, ERMapper Compressed Wavelet, ESRI Shapefiles, LandXML, and GeoJSON. You can also import and export spatial databases, including MS SQL Server, Oracle Spatial, and ESRI ArcSDE.

For data processing, Global Mapper provides batch processing that allows multiple selected files to be converted, reprojected, gridded, and renamed. It also gives you the feature extraction tool that can be used to analyze areas that match a color or color range that are within a certain elevation or have a specified slope layer.

Global Mapper is used by beginners and professionals and competes directly with other GIS applications developed by ESRI, GeoMedia, and MapInfo. The GIS tool supports a large variety of data types and provides helpful tools, such as feature extraction and batch processing. Although Global Mapper does not offer as many features as more expensive applications, like ERDAS IMAGINE, it is still a quality choice.
