SoX

Software Overview

SoX, which stands for Sound eXchange, is an open source, cross-platform digital audio editor. The program is written in standard C and features a command-line interface.

SoX is dubbed the "Swiss Army knife of sound processing programs" by some users because of its ability to convert various computer audio formats to other formats, such as .MP4 , .AVI , .AAC , .VOC , .8SVX , .C01 , .GSM , and .SPH . The program also gives you the ability to apply effects to the audio files, such as changing the tempo, reversing the audio, filtering out noise, swapping stereo channels, and adding an echo. To get more involved with the program, SoX provides an active community of users as you can subscribe to a SoX users mailing list to discuss SoX-related topics with other users.

Sox is a free program used by a variety of users, some that just need to convert a file from one sampling rate to another rate and others that want to apply effects to their audio. If you are comfortable working with a command line interface, SoX provides some helpful audio editing and file converting capabilities.
