What is a PIT file? Firmware file used by some Android-based Samsung mobile phones, including Samsung Galaxy series phones; is part of the firmware that is flashed onto the device from the manufacturer; sometimes used by homebrew users, but not meant to be manually edited.

A PIT file may also be an archive created by PackIt, an archive utility for macOS. It contains multiple files packaged into a single archive, for easier storage and sharing. PIT files may be compressed or uncompressed.

Developer Harry Chesley released PackIt in 1986. It was one of the first popular Mac archive utilities. Early versions of PackIt combined multiple files into a single file without compressing them. Later versions allowed users to compress files using Huffman encoding and encrypt archives using DES encryption.
The archives PackIt produces are saved as PIT files. While PackIt has since been superseded by other archive utilities, including Smith Micro Stuffit, some modern archive utilities can still open PIT archives.
How to open a PIT file
You can use Smith Micro Stuffit Deluxe (Mac, Windows) or The Unarchiver (Mac) to open PIT files and extract the files they contain.
